Turbulent Mechanisms for the Deep Convective Boundary Layer in the Taklimakan Desert

The deep convective boundary layer (CBL) in the Taklimakan Desert plays an important role climate system East Asia. Based on observation experiment and large-eddy simulation, turbulent mechanisms for its formation were revealed this study. This explained why daily maximum CBL depth was independent of surface heating. In late-morning, there a weak temperature inversion near-neutral residual (RL) above CBL. With development CBL, stronger convection could penetrate RL even overshoot top RL. distinctive boundary-layer process entrained free-tropospheric air to warm then promoted entrainment warmed into extra energy supply effectively contributed growth further positive feedback between depths, deeper would form consecutive fair-weather conditions.

We study a boundary layer problem for the Navier-Stokes-alpha model obtaining a generalization of the Prandtl equations conjectured to represent the averaged flow in a turbulent boundary layer.
